The American Immigration Council joined the American Immigration Lawyers Association and other organizations in calling the attention of President Biden to vital reforms to ensure that the Department of Justice (DOJ) effectively implements the administration’s plan to establish fairness and integrity in the immigration courts and the enforcement system. The letter urges DOJ to conduct a review of cases on the immigration court docket to systematically remove those that are not enforcement priorities. The letter also urges the creation of an immigration court system that is independent of the Justice Department. In addition, the letter calls on DOJ and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to announce a commitment to guarantee legal counsel for every person facing removal if they cannot afford it and take immediate steps to expand legal representation programs for vulnerable populations.

The research is clear – immigrants are more likely to win their cases with a lawyer by their side. But very few can get attorneys.

Immigration Justice Campaign is an initiative of American Immigration Council and American Immigration Lawyers Association. The mission is to increase free legal services for immigrants navigating our complicated immigration system and leverage the voices and experiences of those most directly impacted by our country’s immigration policies to inform legal and advocacy strategies. We bring together a broad network of volunteers who provide legal assistance and advocate for due process for immigrants with a humane approach that includes universal legal representation and other community-based support for individuals during their immigration cases.
